The Lamborghini Murciélago, the not-even-less devilish successor to the Diablo, was produced from 2002 to 2010. In keeping with tradition, the Murciélago took on fierce competition from its fellow countrymen at Ferrari. It offered dizzying specifications that left people flabbergasted.
Murciélago is Spanish for 'bat', and, in Lamborghini tradition, it is yet another resounding and elegant name. This name hails from Spanish bullfighting, where a bull named Murciélago supposedly remained standing after having had 24 stabs, which is absolutely exceptional. As for the design, it was done by Belgian designer Luc Donckerwolcke. He had previously designed the Diablo VT 6.0 and drew inspiration from Lamborghini's - albeit somewhat brief at that time - history. The lines of the early Countach were used in the Murciélago's design, and the hyper-performance V12 engine paid homage to Lamborghini's past.
From the outside, it was abundantly clear that this lightning-fast car was one of the fastest on the market. The rearing bull on the Lambo emblem already gave a hint, the sporty lines and ingeniously designed air vents for engine cooling reinforced any suspicion, which was effortlessly confirmed once the V12 engine roared to life.
Over the years, the Murciélago underwent several updates. In 2006, the initial engine received a boost in displacement and continued until 2010 as a 6.5-litre powerhouse available in four versions. Lamborghini significantly increased the power of the initial engine from 572 to 631 hp, 641 hp, 651 hp, or 661 hp, which was in fact almost needless at the 572 hp version already stood out above all cars at that time. To top it off, the measured top speed was no less than 342 kilometers per hour.
In 2006, the Murciélago underwent a facelift, the Murciélagos lineup expanded, also a roadster variant was launched. Until 2010, the Murciélago sold in relatively large numbers, a total of 4,099 Murciélagos was built. The Aventador, which also became an instant classic, took the baton from the Murciélago, ensuring succession.
Nowadays, the Murciélago is the ultimate collector's item that is steadily appreciating in value. This appreciation is partly because it was the first Lambo built under the supervision of Audi after Lamborghini’s becoming part of Audi in 1998.
