The BMW E3 range is a series of high-end sedans produced from 1968 to 1977. They are powered by the M30 six-cylinder engine. This series was intended to compete with Mercedes-Benz, which had largely dominated the German luxury car sector since the late 1920s. This car was very important to BMW's reputation as a manufacturer of sports cars and luxury sedans. . When they were removed from the catalog, the E3s were replaced by the 7 Series (E23).
The E3 range was launched in September 1968 with the 2500 (2,494 cm3) and 2,800 (2,788 cm3) models. It was completed by the 3.0 S (2 985 cm3) in April 1971 and the Bosch 3.0 Si injection version in September 1971. In March 1974 the high-end 3.3 L version (3 295 was launched) cm3), with extended wheelbase of 10 cm (4.80 m instead of 4.70 m) in favor of the rear seats and very complete standard equipment. The last evolution of the range will be in 1976 a modification of the injection system of the 3.0 Si (Bosch D-Jetronic to L-Jetronic) and the replacement of the 3.3 L by the 3.3 Li with injection.
