In 1936 Hitler asked his engineers to build a car that was affordable for all of its citizens (Mercedes, Horsch, BMW, were only intended for the wealthy). Engineer Ferdinand Porsche was chosen, and the final design was the work of Bela Barenyi. This one had already drawn some Mercedes-Benz and, especially, Tatras which served as inspiration for the small German car.
The first model was built in 1938, but the war stopped production altogether.
It was not until 1949 that the Volkswagen was distributed in mass. They knew an incredible success throughout its existence, which ended in 1978 in Europe (its final production, in Mexico, stopped in ... 2019!)
The Beetle is the star of collectors of all kinds, but it is especially the splitwindow (two small separate custodes, from 1949 to 1953) which is the most coveted.
